What Do We Have to Give Back?

In one of our Family Rosary sessions, one participant shared with us a homily by a priest in one of the parishes that can be summarized in a question:

What would be the most important things that we can give God?

To this question, the answer is our time, our talents and our treasures. A few Sundays back, the Gospel challenged us that we must, "give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and give to God what is God’s."

This ties in nicely with the parable in today's Gospel.

In this story a rich man, before going on a journey, entrusted large portions of his money to three of his servants. During the master's absence the two invested the money yielding great returns. The third servant, however, for fear of investing buried the money entrusted to him. When the master came home, he was pleased with the investments of the two servants, but was very upset with the third one.

For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

What we have are God's. God gave us talent not for safekeeping but for us to use, develop and invest. Out of fear or lack of ambition and direction we hide it. Today's Gospel challenges us to use our gifts for the greater good of God's people.

A majority of artists today do not believe in God. One can say that this lack of acknowledgement of a Higher Being can be seen in the lack of greatness in the modern artwork. But it wasn’t always like this.

It used to be that art and music were created for the glory of God. Classic masterpieces in art and music glorified His Glory. Some people are unwilling to acknowledge God and His gifts to each of us purely for selfish reasons.

Today's generation is all about me. Mine. Myself. To today's artist, acknowledging God as the source of our talent will diminish the role of that artist in the creation of the artwork, music, painting or sculpture, baking a great pie, and even helping complete your kid's art project.

As you can see, this is more a statement of the self-confidence of the artist than the quality of the work itself. Certainly Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling is no less than the masterpiece it is, being dedicated and entirely about creation and God.

This does not mean that we all have to be the next Michelangelo , or Palestrina? Of course not.

God packaged talent in kind thoughts, words and actions. Talent comes in the ability to listen to others, especially to your family. Talent shows in how you hold yourself up proud of being you and Catholic. This list is endless.

So, if God were to come today what can we show for the time, talent and treasure that He entrusted us?
