Christmas 2005

Our ship is circling the third planet from the Sun once again. For the most part this planet, called Earth by its inhabitants, is green. This

time of their year, however, its Northern half is either mostly covered or dusted with frozen microscopic flecks of water while the Southern half is hot.

Some people on Earth have two really strange rituals.

This time of their year, most of their houses are lit up like the stars. They cut down and decorate green trees. They worship this fat man in a red suit who rides around in a flying sleigh pulled by flying reindeers bringing toys and gifts. (Note to self: Gotta buy myself that sleigh!) Although they call this man Santa Claus, they call this holiday Christmas. They now have a problem with that name. It appears some people are offended by it. I will keep you posted.

  Update...
At the peak of the celebration they have this great looking meal. They appear to be very happy and kind to each other, they sing a lot and then they open their presents. I can only conclude that this Santa Claus must be such a swell guy!

A few months later, as we have observed in the past, they will have yet another ritual. I wonder what it is really for. I doubt is anyone on Earth is clear on that one either. In that one their young ones will hunt multi-colored eggs and cuddle bunnies. They call that Easter. It appears to me, however, they are celebrating fertility.

It also appears to me as an observer from another planet, that these people have a lot more reasons to celebrate and be thankful for than eggs, bunnies or a fat man in a red suit. How strange indeed.

But then again, who could blame the Earthlings for idolizing Santa Claus? After all, he brings presents and does ask anything in return. Who could blame them for thinking the eggs and bunnies as the reasons for Easter? After all, these things do not ask anyone to follow them.
