Our Lady Of Lourdes

History:
In February 11, 1858, in a hollow rock of Massabielle, Our Lady of Lourdes in southern France, appeared in an apparition to a poor, fourteen-year-old girl, Saint Bernadette Soubirous 18 times.

In one revelation, Our Lady of Lourdes revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception, praying the rosary and asked that a chapel be built on the site of the vision. Our Lady told the girl to drink from a fountain in the hollow rock.

No fountain was to be seen, but when Bernadette dug at a spot designated by the apparition, she was able to find water. The water from this spring has shown remarkable healing power, though it contains no curative property that science can identify. When the curative powers of the stream spread, crowds gathered.

In 1866, Bernadette was sent to the Sisters of Notre Dame in Nevers, where she became a member of the community. She faced some rather harsh treatment from the mistress of novices.

She died from an incurable illness in Nevers on April 16,1879, still giving the same account of her visions. The shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes became one of the major pilgrimage destinations in the world. Bernadette was beatified in 1925 and canonized in 1933 by Pope Pius XI.

A Prayer To Our Lady Of Lourdes
(Feast – February 11)

  O EVER IMMACULATE VIRGIN,
Mother of Mercy,
Health of the Sick,
Refuge of Sinners,
Comfortress of the Afflicted,
You know my wants, my troubles,
my sufferings;
Deign to cast upon me a look of Mercy

By appearing in the grotto of Lourdes
You were pleased to make it
A privileged sanctuary
From where you dispense your favors,
And where many sufferers have obtained
The cure of their infirmities,
Both spiritual and corporal

I come, therefore,
With unbounded confidence
To implore your maternal intercession
Obtain, O loving Mother, my requests
I will endeavor to imitate your virtues,
That I may one day share your glory
And bless you in eternity.

Amen.

Lives of the Saints You Should Know by Margaret R. Bunson, Matthew E. Bunson

New Illustrated Book of Saints
Author: Catholic Book Publishing Company

One Hundred Saints: Their Lives and Likenesses Drawn from Butler's
This is a coffee-table collection of 100 popular saints illustrated with art works taken from international galleries. The saints are listed alphabetically in a valuable table of contents, with a larger list of patron saints following the text. Inclusion is based on popularity within the Christian world and the
availability of atypical art works. Entries are generally based on the 1926-38 edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints, with the length of each entry varying from one-half page to several pages. Short entries giving written insight into the lives of pious individuals are combined with depictions rendered by artists such as Raphael and El Greco. An inexpensive tribute to art and faith more appropriate for gift-giving than for libraries.
