Our Lady Of Perpetual Help
(Perpetual Succor)

History:
Painted on wood, with gold background the picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is of Byzantine style, and venerated through prayers worldwide. It was supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century. Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is translated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

It represents the Mother of God holding the Divine Child while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel present before Him the instruments of His Passion. Over the figures in the picture are some Greek letters

which form the abbreviated words Mother of God, Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael, and Archangel Gabriel respectively.

A pious merchant brought the picture to Rome towards the end of the fifteenth century. In his death he willed that the picture be placed in a church for public veneration through prayer. The picture was exposed in the church of San Matteo, which was served for a time by the Hermits of St. Augustine. Therefore the picture is also called the Madonna di San Matteo.

The picture remained in the church, for nearly three hundred years. In 1812 the French invaded Rome and destroyed the church. The picture disappeared. Between 1863 and 1865 it was discovered in an oratory of the Augustinian Fathers at Santa Maria in Posterula.

A Prayer To Our Lady Of Perpetual Help
(Perpetual Succour: Feast – June 27)

O MOTHER of Perpetual Help,
Grant that I may ever invoke
Your most powerful name,
Which is the safeguard of the living
And the salvation of the dying.

O purest Mary!
O sweetest Mary!
Let your name henceforth be ever on my lips.

Delay not, O Blessed Lady, To succor me
Whenever I call on you.

In all my temptations,
In all my needs,
I will never cease to call on you
Ever repeating your sacred name,
Mary, Mary!

Oh, what consolations,
What sweetness, what confidence,
What emotion fills my soul
When I utter your sacred name,
Or even only think of you!

I thank the Lord for having given you,
For my good, so sweet, so powerful,
So lovely a name.

But I will not be content
With merely uttering your name.
Let my love for you prompt me
Ever to hail you, Mother of Perpetual Help.

Mother of Perpetual Help,
Pray for me and grant me the favor
I confidently ask of you.

Hail Mary (3 times).

Lives of the Saints You Should Know by Margaret R. Bunson, Matthew E. Bunson

New Illustrated Book of Saints
Author: Catholic Book Publishing Company

One Hundred Saints: Their Lives and Likenesses Drawn from Butler's
This is a coffee-table collection of 100 popular saints illustrated with art works taken from international galleries. The saints are listed alphabetically in a valuable table of contents, with a larger list of patron saints following the text. Inclusion is based on popularity within the Christian world and the
availability of atypical art works. Entries are generally based on the 1926-38 edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints, with the length of each entry varying from one-half page to several pages. Short entries giving written insight into the lives of pious individuals are combined with depictions rendered by artists such as Raphael and El Greco. An inexpensive tribute to art and faith more appropriate for gift-giving than for libraries.
