Saint Francis Xavier |
 |
|
Saint
Francis Xavier was canonized in 1622 and proclaimed
patron of all foreign missions by Pope Pius X. F. D.
Dec. 3.
History:
Saint Francis Xavier was born in the family Castle
of Xavier near Pamplona in the Basque area of Spanish
near Navarre, April 7, 1506. He
studied and taught philosophy at the University of
Paris. There he joined his friend Saint Ignatius of
Loyola as one of the seven in founding the Society of
Jesus.
After
the pope formally recognized the Society, Saint Francis
was ordered, with Fr. Simon Rodriguez, to the Far East
as the first Jesuit missionaries. There he
began preaching to the natives and attempted to reform
his fellow Europeans, living among the natives and
adopting their customs on his travels.

During the next decade Saint Francis Xavier
converted tens of thousands to Christianity
throughout the Far East, often traveling thousands
of miles, most on his bare feet.
Saint Francis Xavier was considered a miracle
worker, a prophet and healer.
In
1552 set out for China but died before he reached
the mainland. Francis worked against great
difficulties, language problems, inadequate funds.
He also encountered lack of cooperation and
resistance from European officials.
Nevertheless, Francis left the mark of his
missionary zeal and energy on areas which clung to
Christianity for centuries.

Novena In Honor of
Saint Francis Xavier
(Feast - December 3)
|
O GREAT SAINT FRANCIS,
Well-beloved and full of charity,
In union with you
I reverently adore
The Divine Majesty,
And since I specially rejoice
In the singular gifts of grace
Bestowed on you in life
And of glory after death,
I give thanks to God,
And beg of you,
With all the affection of my heart,
That by your powerful intercession
You may obtain for me
Above all the things the grace to live
A holy life and die an holy death. |
Moreover, I beg of you to obtain for me
(mention special spiritual or temporal favor);
But if what I ask does not tend
To the glory of God
And the greater good of my soul,
I beseech you, obtain for me
What will more certainly
Attain these ends.
Amen.
Our Father ...
Hail Mary ...
Glory Be ... |

availability of
atypical art works. Entries are
generally based on the 1926-38 edition
of Butler's Lives of the Saints, with
the length of each entry varying from
one-half page to several pages. Short
entries giving written insight into the
lives of pious individuals are combined
with depictions rendered by artists such
as Raphael and El Greco. An inexpensive
tribute to art and faith more
appropriate for gift-giving than for
libraries. |
