Saint Gerard, Patron Saint Of Expectant
Mothers |
 |
|
The
faithful offer to Saint Gerard who is invoked as a
patron of expectant mothers as a result of a miracle
effected through his prayers for a woman in labor.
History:
Saint Gerard Majella was born at Muro, Italy, in
1726. After his father died when he was a child he
apprenticed as a tailor. In 1749 Gerard entered the
Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
Gerard
became a lay brother of the Redemptorists. However,
because of his great piety, extraordinary wisdom, and
his gift of reading consciences, he was permitted to
counsel communities of religious women. |

| |
|
| |
His charity,
obedience, and selfless service as well as his
ceaseless mortification for Christ, made him the
perfect model of lay brothers.
Saint Gerard was
known to have the abilities of certain mystics, such
as levitation and bi-location. He was also favored
with infused knowledge of the highest order,
ecstasies, prophecy, discernment of spirits, and
penetration of hearts. Gerard was also
given what seemed an unlimited power over nature,
sickness, and the devil.
St. Alphonsus said:
"Brother Gerard is a saint". When he accompanied the
Fathers on missions, or was sent out on business, he
converted more souls than many missionaries. He
predicted the day and hour of his death. Saint Gerard was
afflicted with tuberculosis and died in 1755 at the
age of twenty-nine.

Novena In Honor of Saint Gerard, Patron Saint Of Expectant
Mothers |
GREAT SAINT GERARD,
Beloved servant of Jesus Christ,
Perfect imitator of our meek
And humble Savior
And devoted child of the Mother of God,
Enkindle within my heart
One spark of that heavenly fire
Of charity which glowed
In yours and made you a seraph of love.
O glorious St. Gerard,
Because like your Divine Master,
You bore without murmur or complaint,
The calumnies Of wicked men. |
When falsely accused of crime,
You have been raised up by God
As the patron and protector
Of expectant mothers.
Preserve me
In the dangers of motherhood
And shield the child I now bear,
That it may be brought safely
To the light of day
And receive the sacrament of Baptism.
Hail Mary (3 times |

Prayer for Motherhood or for
Some Other Special Favor
|
O
Most Blessed Trinity,
I your unworthy creature,
Thank you for all the gifts
And privileges which you
Have granted to Saint Gerard,
Especially for those virtues with which
You have adorned him on earth
And the glory which
You impart to him in heaven.
Accomplish your work, O Lord,
For the greater glory
Of the Holy Church.
Glorify him before men and women
And through his merits,
In union with those of Jesus and Mary,
Grant me the grace for
which I ask ...
(Mention your intentions) |
And you, my powerful intercessor
St. Gerard, always so ready to help
Those who have recourse to you,
Pray also for me.
Prostrate yourself before the throne
Of Divine Mercy and do not leave it
Without being heard.
To you I confide this important
And urgent affair.
Graciously take my cause in hand
And let me not end this novena
Without having experienced
In some way the effects
Of your intercession.
Amen.
(St. Gerard is also invoked as patron of a good
confession.) |

atypical art works. Entries are
generally based on the 1926-38 edition
of Butler's Lives of the Saints, with
the length of each entry varying from
one-half page to several pages. Short
entries giving written insight into the
lives of pious individuals are combined
with depictions rendered by artists such
as Raphael and El Greco. An inexpensive
tribute to art and faith more
appropriate for gift-giving than for
libraries. |
