Saint Martha

"Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus" John 11:5, declares the special relationship Jesus had with Martha, her sister Mary of Bethany, and her brother, Lazarus.

The Gospels mention that Jesus is a frequent guest at Martha's home in Bethany, a small village two miles from Jerusalem.

We all identify the stress any guest can place in our home. Can you imagine the stress the visit of one so Holy in Martha's house? Yet Martha, worried and distracted, welcomed the visits Jesus and his disciples into her home and immediately goes to work to serve them. In all the worldly distractions

Martha was kindly reminded by Jesus that there is only one thing that is truly important -- listening to him. This lesson Martha learned and during the mourning for the death of her brother she got up to hear Jesus when He came again as a guest.

All we know of Martha are the mentions of her in the Gospels of Luke and John. We know nothing more of her later. Legend puts her and Mary to evangelize in France after the Pentecost.

Martha served Jesus. No showy things. No spectacular miracles. She just served Jesus. Just as we all should. Martha is the patron saint of servants and cooks.

A Prayer In Honor of Saint Martha
(Feast – July 29)

O glorious Saint Martha,
I have recourse to your protection and aid,
And as proof of my affection and faith
I promise faithfully to complete this novena.

Comfort me in my difficulties
And intercede for my family
With your intimate friend, our savior,
That we may always hold God in our hearts
And be provided for in our necessities.

I beg your supplications
Especially in behalf of the favor
I ask of you in this novena.

(mention your request).

I ask you, Saint Martha,
By your intercession to help me
In overcoming all my difficulties
And to teach me to become great
In the Kingdom of Heaven
By becoming as humble as you
In this world. Amen.

Our Father ...
Hail Mary ...
Glory Be ...

One Hundred Saints: Their Lives and Likenesses Drawn from Butler's
This is a coffee-table collection of 100 popular saints illustrated with art works taken from international galleries. The saints are listed alphabetically in a valuable table of contents, with a larger list of patron saints following the text. Inclusion is based on popularity within the Christian world and the
availability of atypical art works. Entries are generally based on the 1926-38 edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints, with the length of each entry varying from one-half page to several pages. Short entries giving written insight into the lives of pious individuals are combined with depictions rendered by artists such as Raphael and El Greco. An inexpensive tribute to art and faith more appropriate for gift-giving than for libraries.
