Saint Michael Archangel,
The Warrior of God

Michael Archangel is the special patron of the sick, mariners, police, paratroopers and grocers.

The name Michael is a variation of Micah, which in Hebrew means “Who is like God.”

History:
Michael Archangel is one of the three angels mentioned by name in Scriptures. He is one of seven archangels and sometimes referred to as the Prince of the Seraphim. Saint Michael, mentioned 4 times in Scripture is one of the principal angels.

His name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought

in heaven against the enemy and his followers. In Catholic tradition and liturgy Saint Michael is the protector of the Church.

Based on several Scriptural references to St. Michael Archangel, Christian Tradition gives Saint Michael Archangel four offices:

  1. To fight against Satan
  2. To rescue the souls of the faithful from the enemy, especially at the hour of death
  3. To be the champion of God’s people
  4. To call away from earth and bring men’s souls to judgment

Prayer in Honor of
Saint Michael Archangel, The Warrior of God
(Feast – September 29)

GLORIOUS St. Michael,
Guardian and Defender
Of the Church of Jesus Christ,
Come to the assistance of the Church,
Against which the powers
Of hell are unchained.

Guard with special care
Her august head, the Pope,
And obtain that for him and for us
The hour of triumph may speedily arrive.

O glorious St. Michael,
Watch over us during life,
Defend us against the assaults of the demon,
And assist us especially at the hour of death.

Obtain for us a favorable judgment
And the happiness of beholding God
Face to face for all eternity.

Amen.

Glorious St. Michael,
Intercede for me with God
In all my necessities, especially

(name the request),

And obtain for me a favorable outcome
In the matter now requested of you.

O glorious Prince of the heavenly host,
And victor over rebellious spirits,
Be mindful of me who is so weak and sinful
And yet so prone to pride and ambition.

Lend me, I pray, Your powerful aid
In every temptation and difficulty,
And above all do not forsake me
In my last struggle with the powers of evil.

Amen.

One Hundred Saints: Their Lives and Likenesses Drawn from Butler's
This is a coffee-table collection of 100 popular saints illustrated with art works taken from international galleries. The saints are listed alphabetically in a valuable table of contents, with a larger list of patron saints following the text. Inclusion is based on popularity within the Christian world and the
availability of atypical art works. Entries are generally based on the 1926-38 edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints, with the length of each entry varying from one-half page to several pages. Short entries giving written insight into the lives of pious individuals are combined with depictions rendered by artists such as Raphael and El Greco. An inexpensive tribute to art and faith more appropriate for gift-giving than for libraries.
