Saint Rita
Helper of the Hopeless

Saint Rita is the patron saint that we prayer to intercede with God during difficult circumstances, especially those in troubled marriages and seemingly hopeless causes.

History:
Saint Rita
was born Margarita in Roccaporena, near Spoleto, Italy, in 1381. Rita expressed her desire in the religious and to become a nun at an early age. However, Saint Rita's elderly parents had other plans for her. When Rita was 12 years old, they arranged for her to marry Paolo Mancini, an ill-tempered, abusive individual who worked as town watchman who later proved to be neglectful and unfaithful.

After 18 unhappy years of marriage, Saint Rita's husband was killed in a

street fight. They had two sons who a short time later also died.

Saint Rita tried to enter the Augustinian convent at Cascia, but she was refused because she was a widow. Augustinian sisters should be virgins. However, because of her austerity, devotion to prayer and charity, she was given entry. Her initial failure to join the convent did not embitter her.

Saint Rita received visions and wounds on her forehead that resembled the crown of thorns. She died on May 22, 1413 at Cascia. She was canonized in 1900 and is honored in Spain as the Saint of the Impossible.

Novena in Honor of
Saint
Rita, Helper of the Hopeless
(Feast – May 22)

HOLY PATRONESS
Of those in need, St. Rita,
So humble, pure and patient,
Whose pleadings with your Divine Spouse
Are irresistible,
Obtain for me from your Crucified Jesus
The request I make of you.

(Mention request.)

Be propitious towards me
For the greater glory of God,
And I promise to honor you
And to sing your praise forever.

O glorious St. Rita,
Who miraculously participated
In the sorrowful Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
Obtain for me the grace to suffer with resignation the troubles of this life,
And protect me in all my needs.

Amen.

Our Father ...

Hail Mary ...

Glory Be ... (3 times each)

Dear Rita, model Wife and Widow,
You yourself suffered in a long illness
Showing patience out of love for God.
Teach us to pray as you did.
Many invoke you for help,
Full of confidence in your intercession.
Deign to come now to our aid
For the relief and cure of

(name of sufferer).

To God, all things are possible;
May this healing give glory to the Lord.
Amen.

Hymn to Saint Rita of Cascia

Come, virgins chaste;
Pure brides, draw near:
Let Earth exult and Heaven hear
The Hymn that grateful accents raise,
Our song of joy in Rita's praise.

By fast her sinless frame is weak;
Her livid flesh the scourges streak.
In pity for her Savior's woes,
Her days and even nights are closed.

The thorn-wound on her brow is shown,
The crimson rose in winter blown,
And full-ripe figs on frozen tree
At Rita's wish the wonders see.

The widowed spouse and wedded wife
The way to heaven see in her life;
The way secure our Rita trod,
In life's dim day, through paint o God.

Praise to the Father and the Son,
Praise to the Spirit, Three in One;
O grant us grace in heaven to reign
Through Rita's prayer and life-long pain.

Thou hast signed thy servant Rita
With the sign of thy Love and Passion.

O God! who didst deign
To confer on Saint Rita
For imitating Thee in love of her enemies,
The favor of bearing her heart
And brow the marks of Thy Love and Passion,
Grant we beseech Thee,
That through her intercession and merit,
We may, pierced by the thorns of compunction,
Ever contemplate the sufferings of Thy Passion,
Who livest and reignest forever and ever. Amen.

One Hundred Saints: Their Lives and Likenesses Drawn from Butler's
This is a coffee-table collection of 100 popular saints illustrated with art works taken from international galleries. The saints are listed alphabetically in a valuable table of contents, with a larger list of patron saints following the text. Inclusion is based on popularity within the Christian world and the
availability of atypical art works. Entries are generally based on the 1926-38 edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints, with the length of each entry varying from one-half page to several pages. Short entries giving written insight into the lives of pious individuals are combined with depictions rendered by artists such as Raphael and El Greco. An inexpensive tribute to art and faith more appropriate for gift-giving than for libraries.
